Product Description

HALT20005 120nH Ultra-Broadband Conical 200MHz-40GHz

The Physics of Broadband Conical Chokes: Why the Cone Shape Matters?

In ultra-broadband RF and microwave systems—especially in Bias Tees used to inject DC current into high-speed RF lines—standard solenoidal inductors fail. Standard coils exhibit parasitic parallel capacitance, leading to undesirable resonant dips (sharp insertion loss spikes) at microwave frequencies.

The HALT20005 Conical Inductor resolves this through its conical (tapered) geometry:

•The Conical Apex (Small End): Connects to the transmission line. Its microscopic physical diameter (using 0.05mm ultra-fine wire) minimizes parasitic capacitance to the ground, keeping the choke active up to 40 GHz.
•The Conical Base (Large End): Wound with 0.08mm wire, providing the bulk of the 120nH inductance necessary to block lower frequencies down to 200 MHz.

The tapered transition smoothly grades the characteristic impedance of the coil, delivering a flat, resonance-free (ripple-free) frequency response across an extraordinary range of 200 MHz to 40 GHz.

Innovation: Dual-Wire Graded Winding Technology (0.08mm & 0.05mm)

1.0.05mm Segment (High-Frequency End): Located at the narrow cone tip. It optimizes high-frequency isolation and minimizes transmission-line loading.
2.0.08mm Segment (Low-Frequency/DC Input End): Located at the wide cone base. This thicker wire reduces the DC resistance (DCR) of the coil, allowing it to safely handle up to 200mA of continuous bias current without thermal overheating.

Critical RF Assembly & Mounting Guidelines for Engineers
To achieve flat, resonance-free performance from the HALT20005 up to 40 GHz, the assembly process must be tightly controlled:

1.Mounting Orientation: Solder the conical apex (small head) directly to the RF signal transmission line. The coil body must sit perpendicular to the transmission line trace.
2.Minimize Apex Lead Length: The lead at the apex end must be trimmed as short as possible (ideally <0.5) to prevent parasitic lead inductance from degrading the high-frequency response.
3.Adhesive Securing: Due to the high aspect ratio of the tapered cone, the HALT20005 must be secured with a non-conductive, low-dielectric RF epoxy/glue at its base during assembly to prevent microphonics and physical damage from vibration.
